A mobile application that allows users to faceoff in weekly challenges to find out who is the most fit.
About the Project
FaceOff is a passion project born from a simple insight: more people than ever are investing in their fitness, but staying motivated can be tough. We believe the most natural source of motivation is competition. FaceOff taps into that drive by pairing users with a new partner every week—creating a sense of accountability, fresh energy, and a little of that fantasy football excitement.
Our goal was to build an app that feels intuitive, stylish, and fun. From sleek UI to seamless interactions, FaceOff is designed to make fitness social, competitive, and consistently engaging.

challenge
Design a fitness app that keeps users consistently motivated by turning personal wellness into a social, competitive, and fun experience—while making sure it stays intuitive and engaging week after week.
process
Our design process for FaceOff was rooted in iteration and the goal of making fitness feel more like a game than a chore. We followed a user-first approach through four key phases: research, ideation, design, and testing.
We spoke with gym-goers, runners, and casual fitness fans to learn what keeps them motivated. The takeaway? Motivation fades without accountability or community. That insight shaped our core concept: weekly fitness challenges with rotating partners—bringing fresh competition and social energy, similar to fantasy sports.
From there, we ideated features like progress tracking, one-on-one competitions, leaderboards, messaging, and playful animations to reward wins and consistency.
We mapped flows with low-fidelity wireframes, focusing on simplicity and low-friction interaction. High-fidelity mockups brought in a trendy, energetic visual style with bold colors, clean type, and engaging UI elements. After prototyping, we conducted usability tests to refine flows and improve clarity, adding subtle nudges to keep users engaged week after week.
To ensure consistency and scalability, we leveraged the Material Design System for components and layout structure. The app is being built using React Native, allowing for efficient cross-platform development, and deployed with Vercel for fast, reliable delivery during prototyping and testing. Iterations are ongoing, driven by user feedback and a desire to make the app as fun as it is functional.
Outcome
By building with React Native, we streamline development across iOS and Android, and deploying with Vercel gives us a fast feedback loop for testing and iteration. Using the Material Design System ensures a cohesive UI that feels familiar and intuitive to users right from the start.
FaceOff successfully transforms fitness into a fun, social experience by blending accountability with friendly competition. Test users reported feeling more motivated to stay active, thanks to the rotating weekly matchups and gamified features. The app’s intuitive design, playful visuals, and ongoing iteration based on real feedback leads to high engagement and strong retention among early users—validating our core idea and setting the stage for future growth.
